Free health screenings are available at a Community Health Fair
from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 24 in the Landsbaum Center for Health
Education at 1433 N. 6th 1/2 St.

Those offering screenings include: Indiana University School of Medicine-Terre Haute, Indiana State University College of Nursing, ISU Rowe Center for Communication Disorders, ISU Family and Consumer Sciences, ISU Psychology Department, ISU Athletic Training, Ivy Tech Community College Respiratory Care Program, Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Martin Center, Mental Health America of Vigo County, Wal-Mart and the Vigo County Health Department.

Faculty and students from the Ivy Tech Community College massage therapy program will be giving mini shoulder and neck massages.

In addition to visiting more than 45 community agencies exhibiting at the event, the public can see the latest technology used to train health-care professionals — Stan, the METI human patient simulator.

Dr. Gabi Waite and Ellen Hughes of the IU School of Medicine- Terre Haute and IU medical students will demonstrate heart sounds and respiration on the state-of-the-art simulator. The public can learn about heart sounds through the use of a stethoscope. Also, the public can learn all about having a colonoscopy, which is a life-saving health screening, or help in life saving by donating blood. The Butler University Pharmacy faculty and students at an “Ask a Pharmacist” exhibit will provide information on medication and diabetes.

Activities for children include “Stufee,” a stuffed human body with internal organs can be removed. The Union Hospital Family Medicine Center will read stories to children as part of its Read Out and Read Program. Healthy Snacks will be provided by Baesler’s Market and there are door prizes.

This event, free and open to the public, is sponsored by Indiana University School of Medicine-Terre Haute, Indiana State Medical Association and American Medical Association-Medical Student Sections, West Central Indiana Area Health Education Center, Indiana State University, Ivy Tech Community College and the Vigo County Health Department.
