In terms of setup: If you don't know much about drums I would try to download instructions or speak to someone who can help as this kit includes everything and you'll have to install lots of bolts, drum heads and all hardware. I was surprised that there were no directions but if you know what a drum set looks like the pieces all match and you can quickly figure it out.
The color and construction do not appear cheap but high quality with a great metallic blue shell. I was surprised again as most sets do not include cymbals, hardware etc. This set includes everything (all hardware, stands, seat, etc)which makes it real easy for purchase. I was originally concerned with a lot of sets at the music stores and amazon only providing the drums and not realizing how many things you need (seat, high-hat stand, pedal, cymbal stand, etc). Your costs for a $300 drum set may seem reasonable but if you have to buy all the hardware you could easily double it. Couldn't be happier with the purchase.
I had no idea how to drums when I purchased this. It arrived in a big box with a lot of smaller boxes. The assembly took a few hours, mostly getting the heads on the shells though. It comes with a page of instructions that are fairly easy to follow. Cymbals assemble like a piece of cake and so does the throne. I suggest checking out YouTube videos for putting heads on because I found it difficult to tune them. The snare is also pre-headed.
As for beating on this thing, it's super fun. The crash cymbal is literally laughably bad. I may as well make the noise with my mouth but, it's there so I use it anyway. The sticks that came with it exploded in my hands after about an hour, but new ones are like 7 bucks. One of the springs on the bass pedal analog contraption went flying occasionally because it was too loose, however I didn't notice a difference without it.
The hi hat functions but sounds like it's binding up inside the stand a bit, just dump some WD-40 down it. Occasionally the nut holding the top cymbal will decide to not do anything but you don't know how to use a hi hat yet anyway.
The toms are sturdy even under the most awesome of thrashings, and I assume it's possible to get the heads in tune but I haven't bothered. There are only 6 bolts around the rims and 8 on the floor tom so there's not a lot of... quality.
Kind of think of this as the old "Yeast Donut" paradox. "The best yeast donut I've ever eaten was about 11 degrees different to the crappiest yeast donut I've ever eaten."
Buy the stupid things and learn how to drums.
the hardware might be a weaker quality - a couple reviewers mentioned the cymbals so I ordered name brand cymbals at the same time as the drumset - total about $100. the cymbal / HH stands are kinda thin but OK, I don't move them around at all. However, the biggest item - the drum kick pedal - I was having a big problem getting clean patterns, either double hits or soft / hard impacts ( yes I tried adjusting the springs) so I ordered a better kick pedal for $ 65. and lo and behold I haven't had hardly any problems since. it's possible that all of a sudden my leg ' got it' but I doubt that coincidence.
all in all I spent $ 470. for an upgraded set which is still hundreds less than most name brand kits which are around $ 500 plus $ 250. or more for the cymbals, stands, even seat.
ps - Loudness in general - I know Ya can buy special head pads said to reduce the loudness by maybe 80 % - I did it for free, very well I think - 2 layers of the thin air bubble packing material covered with 2 layers of duct tape for toughness ( size about half of the individual drum head) taped to the drum with the good blue duct tape. very good I think - reduces the loudness by about half yet still each of the drums and cymbals has a fairly good tone.

Overall, a good set for the price. Expect to replace the heads on your tom and snare (as you should anyways because of wear) to a better quality brand. It would be nice if the option was there to ship this set with good quality heads instead. You'll want to replace the cymbal stand as you get more cymbals, and that will be costly. Overall, playable, not bad sounding, a solid starter set.
