Now quinoa is such a tiny grain that it's hard for any strainer to be perfect here. I feel like the market is yearning for a specialty product that doesn't exist yet. A strainer that will handle quinoa without any of the grains getting stuck in the mesh, we need even smaller mesh for this grain!
Saying that, the strainer does do well for this purpose, but it's not perfect. After I'm done I have a small handful of quinoa grains that have managed to get stuck or slip through the first layer of mesh.
4 stars because this is as close as I've gotten to a perfect quinoa strainer and it works for everything else as well.
Another reviewers tip was to clean as normal and then let it dry first and the rest of the stuck grains will pop out after several good shakes and smacks. I have found this to be true, it works well, but it does add an extra step which I feel like shouldn't be necessary if a specialty product existed.
Overall: great product!!!!
The construction is solid. By itself, the wire frame is strong...it's built out of heavy gauge and has a really firm feel to it. But add to that a wooden support down the middle of the handle and you have a really concrete grip that doesn't budge.
The sieve portion is equally solid. The outside circumference consists of the same heavy wire gauge, and the interior strainer consists of a double fine mesh that is extremely strong. It is the ideal sieve for almost anything I can think of that you might wish to strain: noodles, rice, veggies, meat...I can't imagine the item that could bend it.
It also has "grip" tabs at the end that allow it to cling to the edge of the surface of whatever container you're pouring it over...say, a mixing bowl, or a pot. It will not relinquish its grip or slide off due to the bent tabs.
While I would definitely vouch for its functionality in a kitchen, I am going to add what I think is a real testament of its durability. I've bought TWO -- but not because I expect it to break (anything but!). No -- in fact, I use them for straining out impurities in my HORSE TROUGHS. This would include hunks of hay, dirt, even wood or other harsh, crappy junk that falls in there. Despite the punishment these strainers go through they have shown almost NO signs of wear.
I am amazed that this is only costs $6.90. If you have Prime, the PRICE includes shipping...you simply can't beat this bargain.
If you think of the handle pointing downward at the "6 O'clock" position, then there are two loop type hooks at about the10 and 2 O'clock positions that make it possible to support this strainer on the rim of a bowl or pot for straining or rinsing.
I can see one potential weak point that other reviewers have also mentioned, the spot where the handle connects to the rim of the strainer does have a little give to it, So if you are going to put a heavy load in the strainer, I don't think it's a good idea to try and hold the strainer by the " handle alone". There's a reason the manufacturer included support hooks at 10 and 2 O'clock , Use Them!!!
I'm giving this Strainer 4 Stars + 1 extra Star for the low Price = 5 STARS
With a little common sense I can see this strainer lasting a very long time. I recommend this strainer, specially at this price.
I hope this review is helpful.
Also, the mesh is made of a high-quality, polished metal, so the strainer rinses clean in seconds, after use.
This is a good, large strainer for washing fruits and veggies, too.
If I could have only one strainer in my kitchen, it would be this one. And, for the price and how well its made, it's an excellent value.
