We’ve all done it. Bought something thinking it was great, then ended up having buyer’s remorse. Some stores make it such a hassle to return their merchandise that you simply don’t bother. Perhaps you can resell it or find someone to give it to…but wouldn’t you just rather have your money back?

As a rule, I keep all of my receipts in case I need to return something. Without a receipt, most stores will offer you a store credit for the lowest price the item ever sold for. If you’ve had the item for a while, that price could be very low. It’s hard not to feel insulted when a store offers you a $2 refund for a pair of $25 jeans. Yes, this happened to me. And no, I did not take the refund. I donated the pants to a charity.

Brick & Mortar / Online Stores with the Best Return Policies

Nordstrom
Nordstrom is probably best known for their generous return policy. Online orders ship for Free and can be returned for Free or taken to a local store for a refund. Just don’t take off any tags!

Costco
Costco guarantees your satisfaction on every product they sell with a full refund and no time limits, subject to certain product-specific limitations. TVs, major appliances, and other electronics have a 90-day return window.

Kohl’s
With Kohls’ hassle-free return policy, no receipt is no problem! If you paid with a Kohl’s Charge, any other major credit card or added your Yes2You Rewards account to the transaction, they can look up your purchase and give you a refund. If you bought it online, return it at your closest store. Kohl’s does not pay for return shipping. Note: Premium electronics only have a 30-day return window.

Ikea
Ikea gives you a whole 365 days to change your mind! With proof of purchase, you will get a full refund.

Athleta
Items purchased from Athleta may be returned at any time to your local Athleta store. Online orders receive a Free prepaid return shipping label.

Macy’s
General merchandise returns can be made within one year of purchase. Online orders will receive a prepaid shipping label to send back a return. However, if you paid for shipping, that cost is not refundable.

L.L. Bean
L.L. Bean products are guaranteed to give 100% satisfaction in every way. Return anything purchased from them at any time if it proves otherwise. Returns can be made in-store. Returns by mail cost $6.50, unless you are an L.L. Bean cardholder.

Bath & Body Works
Bath & Body Works has a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If at any time you’re not completely satisfied with the quality of their products, you may return them to any Bath & Body Works store.

Bloomingdale’s
You have 365 days to return almost any Bloomingdale’s purchase for a refund or store credit, as long as your purchase is still in saleable condition. Online orders receive a Free return shipping label.

Bed Bath & Beyond
No time limit on when you can return something. With a receipt, you will get a refund for the full amount you paid for the item.

REI
If you are not satisfied with your REI purchase, you can return it for a replacement or refund within one year of purchase.

Michael’s
Michael’s gives you a whopping 180 days (6 months) to return something you don’t want. The item must be new, unused, and in its original packaging. Online orders will be given a Free prepaid shipping label.

JCPenney
No time limit on when you can return something. With a receipt, you will be eligible for an exchange or refund of the purchase price on the original method of payment.

Land’s End
If you’re not satisfied with any item‚ simply return it at any time for an exchange or refund of its purchase price.

Sam’s Club
Return your item to any Sam’s Club location for an immediate refund. Online orders receive a Free prepaid return label.

Sunglass Hut
Sometimes things just don’t work out. And Sunglass Hut totally understands. If you’re not thrilled with your purchase, you’ve got 90 days to return it for either a full refund or an exchange. Online orders will receive a Free prepaid shipping label.

Staples
If you’re not 100% satisfied with your Staples purchase, you can return it for any reason, no matter when you made your purchase. Exceptions apply to technology and business machines, software, furniture, and ink cartridges.

Sephora
Sephora purchases can be easily returned within 90 days of the purchase date to any Sephora location or by mail if you use their Free prepaid return shipping label.

Anthropologie
All merchandise, with the exception of furniture and other over-sized items, may be returned at any time by mail or to one of their stores.

Zappos
Zappos is the online shoe store that started it all – Free shipping, Free returns, 100% satisfaction guarantee. They give you a whopping 365 days to return any item that is in new condition!

City Chic
This store specializes in clothing for women who are, “Confidently Curvy with a Passion for Fashion”. Not only do they offer Free returns, all orders ship for Free, too! You can return your purchase for up to 30 days from the shipping date on your original packing slip. Note: Final sale items cannot be returned.

Sunglass Warehouse
If you are not 100% satisfied with your purchase, you can return it for a full refund up to 365 days of your original receipt. All returns must be in their original condition. A prepaid return shipping label will be provided to you.

Jet.com
Returns are Free on nearly everything sold on Jet. You have 30 days from delivery to make a return.

Donald J Pliner accepts returns and exchanges on unworn merchandise (excluding Final Sale), for up to 30 days from the shipping date on regular price items and for up to 15 days from the shipping date on sale items. Until 4/30/17, a Free prepaid shipping label is provided.

Shopbop
